On December 31st 2017, I will begin running from Woolwich to Woolwich on a 82.2mile route around London’s outskirts called The Capital Ring.
Inspired by stories of previous JMT (John Muir Trail) FKT holder, Brett Maune, and by the FKT Forum community, I am going to attempt to run the route on under 20hrs 40mins. The previous FKT, although not officially registered on any FKT forum or blog, was set by Sark Kenny – he ran from Harrow to Harrow (my hometown) and has done numerous Ultra-length runs/expeditions in his life. I am a newbie at this longer-than-5km distance and am looking forward to the challenge.
The Capital Ring run offers you the chance to see some of London’s finest scenery. Divided into 15 sections, it covers 78 miles (126KM) of open space, nature reserves, Sites of Specific Scientific Interest and more.
- Horsenden Hill
- Eltham Palace
- Abney Park Cemetery
- Olympic Park
- The Great North Wood
- Wimbledon, Richmond Park and the Grand Union Canal
- Welsh Harp
- Finsbury Park
- Walthamstow Marshes
- The Thames Barrier
- Beckenham Place Park
- Streatham Common
- Syon Park
- Wharncliffe Viaduct
Look out for the following:
- In open spaces – a white disc on a wooden post featuring a Big Ben logo and directional arrow. Remember to pay close attention to the arrow to make sure it’s directing you the right way
- On streets – large aluminium signs – featuring the walking man symbol – strapped to lamp posts and other street furniture. These sometimes include the word ‘link’ to indicate a link route to a station
The 78-mile route is divided into 15 walks:
Section 1: Woolwich Foot Tunnel to Falconwood
Section 2: Falconwood to Grove Park
Section 3: Grove Park to Crystal Palace
Section 4: Crystal Palace to Streatham
Section 5: Streatham to Wimbledon Park
Section 6: Wimbledon Park to Richmond Bridge
Section 7: Richmond Bridge to Osterley Lock
Section 8: Osterley Lock to Greenford
Section 9: Greenford to South Kenton
Section 10: South Kenton to Hendon
Section 11: Hendon to Highgate
Section 12: Highgate to Stoke Newington
Section 13: Stoke Newington to Hackney Wick
Section 14: Hackney Wick to Beckton District Park
Section 15: Beckton District Park to Woolwich
I have started a research/planning document where I have mapped a breakdown of the sections, their lengths, their closest transport links, and the time I expect to complete them in…
If you are at all running/cycling inclined and would like to support me in my mad quest for the record, please do get in touch and I’ll organise a section of the route for you to run/cycle with me. You will provide navigation assistance, moral support, and pacing help too! If not, you can follow my training, and the eventual attempt, by following me on social media at @lifebymick, and the hashtag #mwtcr, or comment with your email and I’ll add you to the email contact group to receive updates and notifications on training runs and attempt day!
Follow #MWTCR for updates, or click follow on this blog and I’ll make sure I get more info up as I have it.
